Article I:
Preamble
We, the youth of Africa, united by a shared passion for sustainable development, establish the African Youth for Sustainable Development (AYSD) as a youth-led, non-partisan, non-profit non-governmental organization. Registered under the Companies Act (992) in Ghana on June 28, 2021 (Registration No.
CG9195220621), AYSD is committed to promoting economic and social justice, peace, and youth-friendly access to education, health, and community engagement. Our collective vision is to empower and mobilize young people to build a sustainable Africa where innovation, equity, and active participation drive development.
Article II:
Name, Status, and Purpose
- Name:
The organization shall be known as the African Youth for Sustainable Development (AYSD).
- Status:
AYSD shall be a youth-led, non-partisan, non-profit, non-governmental organization duly registered in Ghana.
- Purpose:
- Empowerment & Education: AYSD shall inspire, educate, and mobilize young Africans to actively engage in sustainable
- Social Justice & Peace: AYSD shall promote economic and social justice and foster peace through community-based initiatives.
- Community Engagement: AYSD shall support youth-led projects that address local and global sustainability challenges.
- Collaboration: AYSD shall work with governments, NGOs, private partners, and international stakeholders to build an inclusive platform for youth-driven change.
Article III:
Vision, Mission, and Objectives
- Vision:
A sustainable Africa led by empowered, innovative, and proactive youth
shall be the vision of AYSD.
- Mission:
AYSD shall provide the tools, training, opportunities, and platforms necessary for youth to drive sustainable development in their communities through education, capacity building, advocacy, and active participation.
- Objectives:
- Capacity Building: Youth shall be equipped with technical, entrepreneurial, and leadership skills to address contemporary
- Quality Education: AYSD shall enhance educational opportunities through scholarships, training, mentorship, and innovative learning
- Economic Empowerment: AYSD shall promote entrepreneurship, vocational training, and job creation to enable sustainable
- Community Transformation: AYSD shall support and implement community projects that improve the social, economic, and environmental conditions in localities.
- Advocacy and Policy Influence: AYSD shall engage in advocacy campaigns and policy dialogues to ensure an enabling environment for youth and sustainable development.
Article IV:
What We Do and Annual Activities
- What We Do
- Education and Training:
AYSD shall conduct workshops, seminars, and online courses on topics such as Renewable Energy, Sustainable Agriculture, Climate Change Adaptation, Water and Sanitation, and Green Entrepreneurship. These programs shall build essential skills and knowledge for youth to effectively contribute to sustainable development.
- Community Projects:
AYSD shall initiate and support projects including Tree Planting, Clean Water Projects, Waste Management Campaigns, and Youth Empowerment Workshops. These youth-led projects shall address local sustainability challenges and foster practical solutions for community improvement.
- Advocacy and Networking:
AYSD shall undertake advocacy campaigns, participate in international conferences, collaborate with governmental and non-governmental organizations, and establish online platforms for idea-sharing. These activities shall ensure that youth perspectives are represented in policy debates and that a robust network of change-makers is maintained.
- Capacity Building Workshops for Professionals:
AYSD shall offer paid workshops and training sessions for professionals to enhance their ability to engage with youth and implement sustainable practices. This initiative shall strengthen the broader ecosystem that supports youth development and community projects.
- Annual Programs for AYSD
- International Youth Leadership and Business Summit (March 15–17): A three-day summit that shall unite young leaders and entrepreneurs from across Africa. It shall feature workshops, panel discussions, and keynote speeches on leadership, innovation, and business development with the objective to facilitate networking, inspire collaborative projects, and provide mentorship from industry experts.
- Sustainable Development Education Week (June 5–11):
A week-long series of seminars, webinars, and interactive sessions focusing on renewable energy, climate change, sustainable agriculture, and related topics (coinciding with World Environment Day on June 5). Its objective shall be to deepen understanding of sustainability issues and promote practical educational solutions in schools and universities.
- Community Impact Challenge (August 1–31):
A month-long competition where youth groups shall design and implement community projects addressing local sustainability issues. Projects shall be evaluated on impact, innovation, and sustainability, with winning teams receiving grants. This challenge shall stimulate grassroots innovation and support community-led sustainable initiatives.
- Youth Innovation Expo (October 10):
An exhibition that shall showcase innovative projects and solutions developed by young people in technology, agriculture, and environmental conservation, including pitch sessions and product demonstrations. Its objective shall be to provide a platform for young innovators to connect with potential investors and partners.
- African Youth Empowerment Forum (September/December):
This annual flagship event shall focus on empowering youth through skill development, career counseling, entrepreneurship workshops, and policy advocacy discussions with industry experts and policymakers. Its objective shall be to influence youth-friendly policies and equip participants with the tools for long-term success. Recognized as the highest event among AYSD’s annual calendar, it shall bring together young people from all over Africa in a selected African country for in-person collaboration and networking. The forum shall last no less than three days and not more than six days, ensuring a comprehensive and immersive experience for all participants.
Article V:
Organizational Structure and Governance
- Governing Bodies
- Board of Directors:
The Board of Directors shall provide strategic oversight, ensure alignment with AYSD’s mission, and uphold governance standards. The Board shall approve budgets, strategic plans, policies, and any amendments to this Constitution.
- Executive Committee:
The Executive Committee shall manage daily operations and implement decisions approved by the Board. The Committee shall include the President/ Chairman and the national executive team (as detailed in Article VII).
Article VI:
Committees
- Establishment of Committees:
AYSD shall establish both standing and ad hoc committees to support specialized functions and ensure effective management of programs and operations. Standing Committees shall include, but not be limited to:
- The Disciplinary Committee, which shall oversee the enforcement of the Code of Conduct and investigate any breaches.
- The Audit and Finance Committee, which shall assist the Treasurer/Finance Officer in ensuring financial transparency and
- The Events and Programs Committee, which shall coordinate the planning and execution of AYSD events and programs.
- The Membership and Communications Committee, which shall
support member recruitment, engagement, and public relations efforts.
- The Advocacy and Policy Committee, which shall focus on both local and global advocacy initiatives.
- Ad Hoc Committees:
Ad hoc committees shall be formed as needed for specific projects or issues, with defined objectives and timelines. These committees shall report directly to the Executive Committee and/or the Board of Directors.
- Committee Responsibilities:
Each committee shall meet regularly, document its proceedings, and report progress and recommendations to the Executive Committee and the Board.
Committee members shall adhere to all AYSD policies and work collaboratively toward achieving the organization’s strategic goals.
Article VII:
National Executives and Continental Representation
- Global Leadership:
AYSD shall have one President/ Chairman, Samuel Apeti, who shall serve as the sole global head and represent AYSD at the highest international level.
- National Executive Structure:
In each country across Africa, AYSD shall be represented by a team of national executives comprising the following positions:
- Vice President/Vice Chairperson
- Secretary-General
- Treasurer/Finance Officer
- Program Director
- Communications Director
- Membership Coordinator
- Advocacy and Policy Officer
- Community Outreach Coordinator
- Monitoring and Evaluation Officer
- Responsibilities of National Executives:
- Vice President/Vice Chairperson:
The Vice President/Vice Chairperson shall act as the President’s representative within each country. This position shall step into the role of the President when necessary, represent AYSD at all official events, and lead the national executive team in the implementation of global strategies and local initiatives.
- Secretary-General:
The Secretary-General shall manage local administrative tasks, maintain official records, and serve as the communication link between global leadership and national offices.
- Treasurer/Finance Officer:
The Treasurer/Finance Officer shall oversee financial management at the national level, including budgeting, fundraising, and ensuring compliance with AYSD policies and regulations.
- Program Director:
The Program Director shall coordinate local programs and projects, ensuring alignment with AYSD’s mission and strategic objectives.
- Communications Director:
The Communications Director shall manage public relations, media outreach, and local communication channels to enhance AYSD’s visibility.
- Membership Coordinator:
The Membership Coordinator shall facilitate recruitment, engagement, and retention of members at the national level.
- Advocacy and Policy Officer:
The Advocacy and Policy Officer shall lead local advocacy efforts, engage with governmental agencies and NGOs, and represent AYSD in policy discussions.
- Community Outreach Coordinator:
The Community Outreach Coordinator shall organize and manage local community engagement initiatives and volunteer activities.
- Monitoring and Evaluation Officer:
The Monitoring and Evaluation Officer shall track and evaluate the impact of local initiatives, ensuring continuous improvement and quality assurance.
- Selection and Term:
National executive members shall be nominated and elected in accordance with AYSD guidelines and shall serve a term of two years, with the possibility of renewal based on performance and board approval.
- Reporting and Accountability:
National executives shall be accountable to the President/ Chairman and the Board of Directors. They shall submit regular progress and financial reports and collaborate with one another, participating in a Regional Coordination Committee to ensure a unified strategy across Africa.
- Regional Coordination:
A Regional Coordination Committee, composed of national executives from various African regions, shall be established to share best practices, address regional challenges, and maintain consistency in the implementation of AYSD’s global strategy.
Article VIII:
Membership, Terms of Service, and Code of Conduct
- Membership Eligibility:
Be an African citizen.
- Be over the age of ten (10) and up to the age of thirty (40), with membership valid up to the age of forty (40).
- Membership Benefits:
Members shall have access to exclusive events, training sessions, mentorship programs, networking opportunities, discounts on workshops and professional services, and recognition through awards and public acknowledgments.
- Membership Terms and Conditions:
A monthly fee of $5 shall be required (renewable annually). Members shall adhere to the AYSD Code of Conduct, which includes respect, confidentiality, inclusivity, and active participation. Violation of the Code shall result in disciplinary actions, including suspension or termination of membership without refund.
- Code of Conduct:
- Members shall treat all stakeholders with dignity and
- Members shall uphold honesty, transparency, and ethical behavior in all interactions.
- Members shall actively contribute to AYSD’s mission and abide by organizational policies.
- Members shall protect sensitive information shared within the AYSD
Article IX:
Disciplinary Actions
- Grounds for Disciplinary Action:
Disciplinary actions shall be taken in cases of:
- Violation of the Code of Conduct (including unethical behavior, breach of confidentiality, or failure to comply with policies).
- Misuse or mismanagement of funds, resources, or
- Any action that harms the reputation or integrity of
- Procedures:
- Allegations shall be reviewed confidentially by the Disciplinary Committee empowered by the Board.
- Based on the severity of the violation, sanctions shall include formal warnings, suspension, demotion (for executives), or termination of membership/position.
- Affected individuals shall have the right to appeal disciplinary decisions via a formal process defined by the Disciplinary
Article X:
Terms of Service for Executives
- Duration and Renewal:
Executive positions shall be held for a term of two years, with the possibility of renewal based on performance and board approval. Elections or appointments shall follow the procedures set forth by the Board.
- Expectations and Responsibilities:
- Executives shall dedicate sufficient time and effort to AYSD’s
- Regular performance reviews shall be conducted, and executives
shall meet established performance standards.
- Executives shall exemplify the highest ethical standards and serve as role models for all members.
- Executives shall disclose any potential conflicts of interest and recuse themselves from decisions where such conflicts exist.
- Executives shall have the option to resign voluntarily or be removed by a two-thirds majority vote of the Board for failure to perform duties, misconduct, or breach of policies.
Article XI:
Role of Patrons and Board Members
- Role of Patrons:
Patrons shall serve as honorary supporters and strategic advisors, leveraging their networks for AYSD’s benefit. They shall help raise AYSD’s profile, assist in securing sponsorships and partnerships, and represent AYSD at high-level events without involvement in day-to-day operations.
- Role of Board Members:
Board Members shall oversee the strategic direction, financial management, and overall governance of AYSD. They shall participate in major decisions, approve budgets, review program outcomes, and make policy recommendations. Board Members shall act with transparency and in the best interest of the organization, convening regularly to review performance and discuss strategic issues.
Article XII:
Financial Management and Transparency
- Funding Sources:
AYSD shall secure funding through membership fees, donations, grants, sponsorships, and income from services and events.
- Financial Accountability:
The Treasurer/Finance Officer shall prepare annual budgets and financial reports. Independent audits shall be conducted regularly, and financial reports shall be made available to members and stakeholders.
- Use of Funds:
Funds shall be used exclusively for advancing AYSD’s mission and objectives. Significant expenditures shall require Board approval.
Article XIII:
Operational Principles and Partnerships
- Operational Principles:
AYSD shall operate with inclusivity, transparency, collaboration, and sustainability. All youth, regardless of background, shall have the opportunity to participate actively. Open communication and responsible practices shall be maintained in all operations and financial activities.
- Partnerships and Sponsorships:
AYSD shall welcome collaborations that further its mission. Partners and sponsors shall receive recognition through branding opportunities, event participation, and media exposure. All partnerships shall align with AYSD’s values and strategic objectives.
Article XIV:
International Day Celebrations
AYSD shall leverage international observances to educate, advocate, and mobilize youth. Each celebration shall serve as a catalyst for community engagement and policy dialogue:
- International Day of Education (January 24):
Focus shall be on promoting quality education, digital transformation, and teacher support through seminars, public debates, and awareness campaigns.
- International Day of Zero Tolerance to Female Genital Mutilation (February 6):
Focus shall be on mobilizing action against FGM through education and advocacy.
- International Day of Women and Girls in Science (February 11): Focus shall be on encouraging equal participation in STEM fields through workshops and mentoring.
- International Day for the Right to the Truth concerning Gross Human Rights Violations and for the Dignity of Victims (March 24):
Focus shall be on advocating transparency and accountability in human rights.
- International Girls in ICT Day (April 22):
Focus shall be on promoting digital inclusion and empowering girls in technology.
- World Day for Safety and Health at Work (April 28):
Focus shall be on enhancing occupational safety and health awareness.
- International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (June 26): Focus shall be on combating drug abuse and trafficking through evidence- based research and education.
- World Youth Skills Day (July 15):
Focus shall be on emphasizing vocational training and skills development for sustainable economic growth.
- International Day of Charity (September 5):
Focus shall be on celebrating volunteerism, charitable initiatives, and community service.
- World Science Day for Peace and Development (November 10): Focus shall be on highlighting the role of science in fostering peace and sustainable development.
- Human Rights Day (December 10):
Focus shall be on advocating equality, non-discrimination, and social justice for all.
Article XV:
Amendments, Future Directions, and Governing Law
- Amendments:
This Constitution shall be amended by a two-thirds majority vote of the Board of Directors. Proposed amendments shall be communicated to the membership in advance and implemented transparently.
- Future Directions:
- Program Expansion: AYSD shall continuously refine and expand its initiatives to address emerging sustainability challenges.
- Innovation and Research: AYSD shall invest in research, technology, and innovative methods to empower youth.
- Enhanced Partnerships: AYSD shall strengthen local and international collaborations to maximize impact.
- Impact Evaluation: AYSD shall regularly assess outcomes and adjust strategies to ensure long-term success.
- Governing Law:
This Constitution shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of Ghana. Any disputes arising shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of Ghanaian courts.
Article XVI:
Committees (Additional Provisions)
- Establishment of Committees:
AYSD shall establish standing and ad hoc committees to support specialized functions and ensure effective management of programs and operations.
Standing Committees shall include, but not be limited to, the Disciplinary Committee, Audit and Finance Committee, Events and Programs Committee, Membership and Communications Committee, and Advocacy and Policy Committee.
- Ad Hoc Committees:
Ad hoc committees shall be formed as necessary for specific projects or issues, with clearly defined objectives and timelines.
- Committee Responsibilities:
Each committee shall meet regularly, document its proceedings, and report progress and recommendations to the Executive Committee and the Board.
Committee members shall adhere to all AYSD policies and work collaboratively to achieve the organization’s strategic goals.
Article XVII:
Executive Meetings, Planning, and Scheduling
- Executive Committee Meetings:
The Executive Committee shall meet monthly for strategic planning, project reviews, and coordination of organizational initiatives. These meetings shall be scheduled for the first Monday of every month at 10:00 AM (local time) with the option for virtual attendance via the designated online platform. The Secretary-General shall prepare and distribute the agenda at least 48 hours in advance, and minutes shall be documented and shared with relevant stakeholders within one week.
- Board of Directors Meetings:
The Board of Directors shall convene quarterly on the second Wednesday of the first month of each quarter at 2:00 PM to review organizational performance, approve strategic initiatives and budgets, and address
governance matters. Detailed minutes shall be recorded, approved at the subsequent meeting, and disseminated for transparency and accountability.
- National Executive Meetings:
Each national executive team shall hold monthly coordination meetings on the third Tuesday of each month at 3:00 PM (local time) to ensure alignment with global strategies and effective local implementation. Summaries and action items from these meetings shall be reported to the Global Executive Committee.
- Ad Hoc Meetings:
The President/ Chairman or a majority of the Executive Committee shall call for ad hoc or special meetings as needed, with a minimum notice of 48 hours, to address urgent issues or opportunities outside the regular schedule.
- Annual General Meeting (AGM):
An AGM shall be held on the first Monday of December at 10:00 AM to comprehensively review the organization’s annual performance, provide a forum for member feedback, and discuss strategic plans for the upcoming year, including the election of executive positions if applicable.
Article XVIII:
Final Provisions and Closing Statement
We, the founding members, executives, board members, patrons, and all affiliated stakeholders of African Youth for Sustainable Development (AYSD), shall hereby adopt this comprehensive Constitution as the supreme guiding document of our organization. Through unity, accountability, and innovation, we shall empower Africa’s youth, drive sustainable development, and shape a prosperous, equitable future for all.
